I am a directive therapist so I try to have clients leave my office after each visit with suggestions for improvement in communication, managing anger, assertion, or in whatever areas are troublesome. I have couples look at the system they are a part of, so that the blame does not fall on one person. I want individuals to see how their interaction patterns are causing discomfort in their relationships. We examine patterns, family dynamics and history, and move from there to realistic goals for behavior changes. I also do pre-marital or engagement counseling which is very helpful to couples wishing to check out their differences and learn some techniques to ease the transition into married life.
