To me, couple's therapy is vital, challenging and its results can be very healing and satisfying. As a therapist, my job is to "hold the hope" for the relationship which is often in pain and for the people who feel discouraged about their future together. My initial objective is to create a safe place for each person. Within that place of safety and respect they can explore what buttons get pushed in their relationship as well as explore ways to reconnect. They can learn how to communicate clearly in a way that is more loving and less triggering to their partner. (When the partner is less triggered, the partner is more likely to fully listen and be supportive). I work to help each person probe the individual issues which play out within the system. This understanding creates the foundation for change. It is especially important to me to work from a positive position, e.g., what initially attracted each person to the other and what are the strengths of their relationship. These are the building blocks for creating a supportive union. With over 20 years of experience and specialized training, I have successfully worked with abusive relationships, betrayals, addictions, and the myriad of other issues that impede connection.
