Marriage Therapists: Join Today

We are creating a network of experienced practitioners of marriage and couples counseling as a resource for couples looking for competent therapists, and a referral resource for clergy, physicians and other professionals who often do not know where to send couples. If you work in marriage and couples counseling, we invite you to learn about The National Registry of Marriage Friendly Therapists, including benefits, costs, eligibility, and values behind the Registry. We hope you will become part of our vision that every couple who needs marriage counseling can work with a skilled marriage counselor who will support them on the journey.

In 2008 so far a whopping 41% of our new therapists were referred by a colleague and 24% found us doing web searches. We are unique. We are a collection of professionals joining a movement.

At the core of this movement are workshops presented around the nation by Bill Doherty. These workshops are now available on DVD for therapists ongoing training (for CE's) and for therapy students/interns. Registry members get 25% off (saving up to $80!) Topics include:

Working with Couples on the Brink
Bad and Good Couples Therapy
Priority Setting in Couples Therapy: The Family FIRO Model
Working with Remarried Couples in Stepfamilies
How Experienced Therapists Undermine Marriage

Imagine going to the dentist to have a cavity filled? How would it be if you discovered, perhaps the hard way, that the dentist’s drill was dull? Aside from the resulting pain and possible damage, no amount of Novocain will keep you from wondering why the dentist wasn’t better prepared. The annual conference in Santa Clara inspired me to be better prepared as a clinician and to make certain that my own therapeutic skills aren’t dull... Dr. William Doherty’s program “To Leave or Stay: Couples on the Brink” was invaluable. Doherty’s presentation to a packed auditorium evolved from four background points:

April 2007:

We are pleased to tell you that the Registry has recently received two important forms of recognition:

The Harvard Mental Health Letter listed us as just one of just two resources to refer couples for therapy. The other was AAMFT.

The National Extension Relationship and Marriage Education Network, funded by the federal government, has listed us, along with AAMFT, as a resource for couples who need therapy.  Here's what they wrote:  "The National Registry of Marriage Friendly Therapists was developed to help marriages by linking couples with the most highly qualified therapists in the country."

Testimonials

"I have found the registry to be a solid source of referral. With the profile, couples have an idea of who they are meeting and how I work. You are making a difference."

Thank you again, for your leadership.

"I have recently joined the Registry of marriage friendly therapists and must say that in my almost 20 years of experience this is perhaps the greatest professional opportunity I have come across.   A "balanced pro-commitment stance" has been in my heart but not language until this point."

Michael J. Sannito, M.A., L.P.C., Director of Behavioral Sciences, University of Oklahoma-Tulsa, Department of Family Medicine

"FYI my practice seems to be moving more and more towards couple-dominated work, and the site is definitely helping!"

Dr. Edward J. O'Brien

"As a clergy person I will share your website with my colleagues. We need to know which counselors to send our people to and this is one of those gems which needs to be broadcasted more completely."
